Nathalie and Hugo’s Lakeside Jewish Wedding, Cedar Lakes Estate, NY

Nathalie and Hugo’s Lakeside Jewish Wedding, Cedar Lakes Estate, NY

A Magical, Golden Hour Lakeside Wedding

Nathalie and Hugo’s lakeside Jewish wedding ceremony at the Cedar Lakes Estate took place by a gorgeous, shimmering lake on a serene, natural camping preserve which by the late afternoon of each summer day, transforms itself into truly a magical place. Nestled about an hour and a half from Manhattan along the border of New York and New Jersey, Cedar Lakes Estate is the perfect venue if you want your wedding to include sweeping, mountaintop views. We certainly took advantage of the grounds for portraits of Nathalie and Hugo, and a found a perfectly picturesque location for the signing of the ketubah.

Details From A Fairy Tale

The details and decor at Nathalie and Hugo’s wedding, from flower crowns to oversized balloons to a flower and string light garden feeling at dinner lended an elegant, dreamy feel to the whole day. Their wedding portraits by the lake, and atop the mountain right as the light turned perfectly golden, have a timeless, editorial feel.

When Love Stops Time

Nathalie and Hugo’s traditional Jewish ceremony was held at the golden hour on a summer day. The beauty of the moment and the location transfixed their friends and family for a few moments, and the rest of the world crept silently away. Their chuppah: asymmetrical with pinks, whites, a wrap of tulle, and plenty of green, matched perfectly with the natural summer palette. It was pure magic when they said, “I will. I do. With all my love,” and then the party began. And what a party it was! In the end, it doesn’t matter where you’re going, it’s who you have beside you – isn’t it? So much joy at this wedding!

Elizabeth and Ted’s Seaside Belle Haven Club Wedding, Greenwich, CT

Elizabeth and Ted’s Seaside Belle Haven Club Wedding, Greenwich, CT

Elizabeth and Ted’s Seaside Belle Haven Club Wedding included the couple’s two sweet Dachshunds, Sammy and Mr. Handsome. These doggies really stole the show. It was fun to see how they were included for the whole wedding day, from getting ready in the morning to the Dachshund shaped cookies which guests took home as favors. I loved their Dachshund logo on their custom matchbooks, a perfect match! Because wedding days are days for the whole family, it’s so fun when the fur babies are included.

A Classic Summer Ceremony

First of all, we couldn’t have asked for a more gorgeous summer day. The details were classic and personal. Elizabeth’s sister, her matron of honor, is the fashion designer Mestiza. She designed the dress she wore and the bride’s rehearsal dinner dress. In addition, all the bridesmaids wore different dresses with slightly different lengths and tones. Everyone was stunning against the backdrop of the boats on the harbor at the Belle Haven Club. Most noteworthy, Carol Lake painted a painting to commemorate the occasion that Elizabeth and Ted will enjoy for years to come. When it was finally time to leave, I couldn’t help but snap one last photo of the full moon over the water.

Kate and Josh’s Seaside Private Home Montauk Wedding

Kate and Josh’s Seaside Private Home Montauk Wedding

A Magical Seaside Montauk Wedding

Fortunately, I was available for a last minute booking this past September: Kate and Josh’s seaside Montauk wedding at the bride’s mom’s private home. Montauk is the end of Long Island’s south shore and is known endearingly by locals as “The End”. Kate’s mom’s newly built home was a true architectural beauty! The day of the ceremony, once I arrived, I could not stop taking pictures, because so many of the sweet, modern, minimal details were DIY or meaningfully provided by friends of the family or local vendors. It added a special touch to the day. Everything was light and bright, truly a photographers dream. Also, the minimal design of the home and decor added a fresh, elegant feel to the wedding, which was gorgeous against the palette of the seaside: pale blues, greens, white, yellow, and gold.

Keeping It Casual

Kate and Josh wanted their day to be relaxed and stress-free, so they asked me to please keep the photography casual. Basically, they didn’t want a lot a posed photos. Ok, I said, but we will need a few couple and family portraits, is that ok? They agreed, but to just a few. The trees, sky, and sea behind gorgeous, sun soaked ditch plains created a magical backdrop. We kept it casual and just continued shooting everything as the day went on, all the happiness, nerves and smiles, the shy dog, the gorgeous wedding party and the breath-taking surroundings, all day long, even as a little rain shower sprinkled down during dinner, which was held outside under the stars. Finally, after a long day of shooting, we headed home.

A Perfect Day By The Sea

I think in The End, (no pun intended), the photos are a perfect description of the day and the couples wishes. Kinda cool, don’t you think? I shot this wedding with a mix of vintage film and digital cameras. I personally love the Lihi Hod gown, it’s perfection on Kate. Please take a look and let me know what you think. I love how the photos turned out and hope you do as well. Let me know, leave a comment below.

Jessie and Brendan’s Art Deco Rainbow Room Wedding, NY

Jessie and Brendan’s Art Deco Rainbow Room Wedding, NY

An Art Deco Wedding at the Top Of the World

Jessie and Brendan’s Art Deco Rainbow Room wedding was epic. Not epic in the epic sense, as much as epic in the EPIC sense! The Rainbow Room is an epic venue and perfect for a jaw dropping first look against the breathtaking backdrop of the New York City skyline. Furthermore, everything about this couple’s special day shined with happiness, from the golden and white details, to the sparkle in their eyes as they giggled and smiled together through the night. Even their names glowed brightly thanks to the beautiful neon art created by Marcus Conrad Poston. The timeless luxury of the Rainbow Room along with the classic Art Deco styling made this truly an exquisite affair.

Good Job, Pierre!

In addition to the epic venue, Jessie and Brendan have an epically important guest. Probably the most important part of the story is Pierre. He’s an adorable French Bulldog who worked his magic and pulled his Cupid bow, striking at just the right moment to bring this sweet, happy couple together. It was only natural that Pierre took center stage at their incredible wedding on top of the world at the Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center. He looked just as handsome as his parents as they posed for portraits at The Top Of The Rock. Good job, Pierre!

Golden, Lux Styling for the Elegant Rainbow Room

There’s very few things I love as much as the classics. If you can imagine a wedding day that’s glamorous, Jessie and Brendan’s choices from stationery to dress to decor to jewelry was tasteful and chosen to reflect the timeless, elegant quality of the Rockefeller Center in New York City. The photographs seem timeless due to a soft romance in the vintage design elements and details in white, gold, and black. Also, the crystal decor and unique architecture of the Rainbow Room lended an upscale feel. Finally, the sweet white chuppah was a perfect symbol for the day.

Because Jessie and Brendan set their date for spring, they also took advantage of the beautiful seasonal blooms and drenched the place in cherry blossoms. For so many of us, cherry blossoms symbolize the start of something new, something great, therefore it was another great example of ways that the details of this Art Deco wedding reflected Jessie and Brendan’s love. In conclusion, we wrapped up the night with an EPIC kiss under the iconic neon Rainbow Room sign on the busy street of New York City. Check out the photo and let me know what you think in the comments.

Veronica and Cooper’s Emotional, Glam NYC Wedding at 632 on Hudson

Veronica and Cooper’s Emotional, Glam NYC Wedding at 632 on Hudson

An Epic Love Story

Veronica and Cooper’s Glam NYC Wedding was one for the books. The beautiful bride wrote, “Cooper and I fell in love immediately. We got engaged within a year of meeting. Two months later, I went to the doctor for what we would later discover was Autoimmune Encephalitis. My immune system was attacking my brain, at first causing mood swings of anger and crying, and eventually causing loss of speech ability, loss of motor control, and seizures. Cooper defended me to doctors who thought I was being hysterical. He acted as my interpreter when I could no longer express myself.”

Right Place, Right Time

“Doctors didn’t know how to diagnose me and said they couldn’t help us. Cooper never lost faith in my getting better. He gave me the strength to go on when my brain was armed against me. Eventually, Cooper’s mom was reading a book, “Brain on Fire,” about a woman who went through the same thing. I landed in the hospital in front of the right doctors, the same doctors in the book. Finally, we started treatment. I was injected with other people’s immune systems, intravenous immunoglobulin. A science miracle worked and now, I’m 100% healthy. Cooper and I knew each other so much more deeply [after that] and could not wait to get married.”

A Loose, Organic, Joyful Vibe

“Due to our extraordinary story, we needed an extraordinary venue. Our wedding was held at 632 on Hudson. We wanted our wedding to be timeless, organic, playful in moments, and always full of love and joy. Therefore, following the ceremony was an extended cocktail hour. Rather than choosing colors randomly, our wedding colors were midnight blue and gold, inspired by a portrait on the atrium ceiling. My bridesmaids wore earthy metallics and blush. The bridal flowers were burgundy, red, blush, and green. Most noteworthy, we went for a loose prohibition era, Glam New York wedding vibe!”

Why Film?

Why Film?

Why Film?

Why film you ask? Shooting with film is an artistic decision, part science, part artistic tool. Having film cameras in our “tool box” makes sense to us for three main reasons. The first is that we learned photography using film, (pre digital), why throw away all that knowledge? The second is that the combination of film and film cameras create soft beautiful images, specifically with medium format film, (which is a large negative), and third – it sets us apart from most wedding photographers. These days shooting with film is a niche market, one which we gladly take part in! We feel that strongly about the art of creating the images we’re commissioned to create. Shooting with film does cost a little more, but we feel it’s worth it. It’s as if film breaths life into images as living breathing photographs. Film, as an artistic tool, captures emotionally powerful images with beautiful soft tones. All the film we shoot gets scanned during processing at the lab. A good lab is most important, our lab of choice is the best lab we’ve found, we use Richard Photo Lab.

What’s in Our Camera Bags?
Since we shoot with both film and digital cameras, we’re considered hybrid shooters. The best of both mediums. Our camera bags are pretty heavy but we love what we can create using different types of cameras. I thought it might be fun to share what equipment we use to create the images we make. We use both film and digital cameras on most of our shoots, we love and understand them inside and out. The film cameras we shoot with are for the most part the Contax 645, the Hasselblad 500CM, the Rolleiflex, Widelux F7 and Holga. We also love and embrace digital as an important tool and photographic advancement. The digital cameras we use are Canon 5D’s.

Please take a look at the different cameras we use below to learn more about the gear we use and the images we create. After all, it isn’t the camera, it’s the photographer, but having really great equipment helps! The film cameras listed here are no longer produced, and are therefore even more special. Film and film cameras can still be purchased at camera stores. Give them a try! If you have any questions about film cameras, feel free to ask, I may know the answer! You can also follow us on IG at @karenhillweddings.

FILM CAMERAS

Medium Format Film Cameras:

Contax 645, with an 80mm f2 and a 45mm f2.8 Carl Zeiss Optics Lens

This camera is one of my favorites and in my opinion, is the best camera ever made. This auto focus camera shoots a rectangle, an actual 6×4.5 negative size. There are 32 images per roll on 220 film and 16 images per roll on 120 film. I use 400, 800 or 3200 ISO film.

Hasselblad 500CM, with an 80mm f2.8 Carl Zeiss Optics Lens

This Swedish made camera is a vintage beauty from around the 1960’s. It’s shutter makes a specific loud “kerrrplunk” sound, music to my ears. It shoots a square 6×6 negative, with 24 images per roll on 220 film. This is a completely manual camera, there is no battery which means no light meter. A hand held light meter is a must. It’s Carl Zeiss lens renders images that are extremely sharp and at the same time, a little dreamyI use 400, 800 or 3200 ISO film. I adore this camera.

In 1969, a slightly modified Hasselbald went to the moon on the Lunar space shuttle, Apollo 11 when astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin became the first people to reach the moon. A little history side note!

This is a photo I took of the actual Hasselbald that went to the moon at the National Air and Space Museum in DC in 2016. A pretty cool geek out moment.

Rolleiflex, with an 80mm 2.8 Carl Zeiss Optics Twin Lens

This twin lens camera is a vintage gem from the 1960’s. The first Rolleiflex was produced in 1929. It shoots a square, 6×6 negative, with 12 images per roll of 120 film. It’s super Carl Ziess lens produces images that are a little bit dreamy. I use 400, 800 or 3200 ISO film. I love this camera.

Holga

The Holga has a plastic lens and one exposure, f8 at a 60th of a second. This camera loves light as much as I do. It shoots a square 6×6 negative, with 12 images per roll of 120 film. Since the lens is plastic, two things happen when you shoot with it, first, the plastic lens makes the image a bit blurry and secondly, when light hits the lens, it causes refraction. Refraction essentially means that when light hits the lens, the light wave is changed and causes light to record in the most curious ways. I find this “accidental light” rendering to be lovely, quirky, dreamy and poignant. The images look like they were shot 100 years ago!

35mm Film Camera:

Widelux F7

This panoramic camera shoots 180 degrees with a barrel, rotating lens, which I love because as it makes the exposure, it distorts and bends the image. This camera takes in the whole scene! It has three shutter speeds and is a completely manual camera. No battery means no light meter. There are 20 images on each roll of 36 exposure film. One of my favorites for it’s specific fun style. I use 400, 800 or 3200 ISO film.

DIGITAL CAMERAS

High Resolution Digital Camera:

Canon 5D Mark III & IV, with the 24-70mm f2.8 ll, a 50mm f2.5 with Macro Focus, and a 35mm f1.4 Lens

Super flexible in all types of light, sharp and fast with tons of exposure latitude. We shoot in RAW. Black and White is achieved in post processing. These cameras and lenses are great additions to our camera bags!
